The advantages of the PGWP: your bridge to permanent residence in Canada

What is the PGWP?

  • Having completed a program of study of at least 8 months at a designated learning institution (DLI) that is eligible for PGWP (900 hours for certain Quebec programs)
  • Have maintained full-time status during each semester (part-time is allowed only in the last semester)
  • Apply within 180 days of confirmation that you completed your program
  • That your study permit was valid at some point within those 180 days
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD: minimum level CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French (in all 4 skills)
  • Other university, college, or polytechnic programs: CLB/NCLC 7 for non-major university programs, and CLB/NCLC 5 for college or polytechnic programs
  • If you applied for your study permit before November 1, 2024, this requirement does not apply to you.
  • This only applies if your study permit was requested on or after November 1, 2024, and only for programs other than bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees (these three levels have no field of study restrictions).
  • Graduates of college, polytechnic, or other university programs should verify that their program is linked to occupations with long-term shortages.
  • You are not eligible if you have previously received a PGWP, if you studied English or French as a second language, if you took general interest courses, or if you completed more than 50% of your program through distance learning.
  • Programs delivered by private schools on behalf of a public institution (curriculum licensing agreements / P3) are generally not eligible , except in specific cases depending on the start date of your program.
